About Me

Writing With Teeth is a personal writing craft blog to explain what I've noticed in my own writing, and the resulting framework that I've noticed doing so. My 'system, person, care'-framework will be the primary guide to the contents of my essays, because I'm interested in people surviving systems and care trying to make their lives easier.

Why Writing With Teeth?

Writing With Teeth was born from the desire to understand my own writing. What keeps it turning? Why do my stories stall? What is the engine behind the words I'm producing? The current result of that journey is Writing With Teeth.

Most importantly, I wanted to finally see writing advice that is specific instead of general, writing advice that bites instead of trying to appeal to everyone. I want a look at someone's process from getting from idea to finished product, and what happens in the 'that makes sense' moments for that writer.

I'm of the belief that vague advice is helpful for new writers, but there's a lot of nuance that gets lost when we talk about writing in general. I'm not proclaiming to be able to go as in-depth as personal guidance, but I wanted to show a personal peek behind the curtain instead of talking endlessly about the vague statements thrown around in writer spaces.

I also think that writing is deeply personal, so while my essays are my way of looking at writing, they're by far not the only way, and others have had opinions about writing that are invaluable to listen to as well. The ultimate goal at the end of the day is holding a finished project in your hands. How that project was created is up to yourself, because there's no one way to write a book.

Who am I?

I'm Ymir, and I have been writing since I could hold a pen. I still own my baby writing, and my engine was already running at full, 8 year old speed when I didn't know what I was doing. I just wrote what made sense. Years later, and I still write what makes sense, as I'm mostly a pantser. I've dabbled in just about every genre under the sun, but spent most of my time writing fanfiction.

You can find me in the following places:

  • AO3
    • This comes with the warning that I've written some dark and potentially disturbing shit. So use AO3's filters liberally if you have to! Stay safe.
  • E-mail
    • For your opinions, essay ideas you'd love to see, or just to have a chat about writing.
